Genesee Reading Series (3-8-11)

The Genesee Reading Series, with impresario Wanda Schubmehl, continues to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Writers & Books with a program featuring Claudia Stanek and Kathleen Van Schaick.

Maybe it isn’t quite spring in Rochester, but the March program of the Genesee Reading Series will have you feeling as if a new season is already here! Kathleen Van Schaick and Claudia Stanek will awaken your creative senses with their unique poetic voices.

Claudia StanekClaudia Stanek‘s poetry is centered around place – her ancestral origins, her own origins, and the psychological and emotional states of being produced from those origins. In the fall of 2010, Claudia traveled to Poland, the land of her ancestors. This opportunity allowed her to explore a new sense of place in the context of Poland’s evolution during the time since her ancestors emigrated to the United States.

Claudia received her MFA from Bennington College and is a founding member of the non-profit group Just Poets in Rochester, NY. Her work has appeared in Chaffin Journal, Euphony, Fourth River, Roanoke Review, and Red Wheelbarrow, among others journals. Her work has also appeared in the anthologies Cinquainicity, Community Voices, Knocking on the Silence: A Finger Lakes Anthology, Le Mot Juste, and Common Intuitions. Her poem “Housewife” was selected by composer Judith Zaimont as the inspiration for a commissioned libretto for the Eastman School of Music’s 2009 Women in Music Festival. She owns and manages Poetic Effect, a poetry submission preparation service, and she lives in East Rochester, NY with her rescued pets.

Kathleen Van SchaickKathleen Van Schaick’s love of poetry began when, as an elementary school teacher, she collaborated with several local poets including Judith Kitchen and Dale Davis. Her poems have appeared in The Dire Elegies: An Anthology Of Endangered Species, Listening to Water: An anthology of the Susquehanna Watershed, Sea Stories, Journal of the Blue Ocean InstituteByLine, Puffin Circus, and mny other places. Her poem “women fish” won the 2006 S. Portia Steele Memorial Contest sponsored by the San Francisco Peninsula Chapter of the California Writers Club. Kathleen was editor of Le Mot Juste, the annual anthology of Just Poets for the years 2008, 2009, and 2010. She was invited to be a participating poet in the 2009 Women in Music Festival sponsored by the Eastman School of Music.

The Genesee Reading Series will be held at Writers & Books, located at 740 University Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607, on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 7:30 pm. Admission is $3 for members and $6 for the general public.
