April is the Coolest Month – Just Poets Favorite Poem for April 20

As part of National Poetry Month, Just Poets members will share their favorite poems along with a brief note about why the poem is their favorite poem. Today’s poem is selected by Ed Scutt.

The Police Academy Recruits Run Laps Around the Slo-Pitch Softball Fields

Someone may have told them they were tough,
and it might have been themselves. We, the slo-pitch
league , minor division, say nothing as they sprint
and jog, sprint and jog. We do not razz the chubby
and wheezing. We follow the lark of a lazy ball
in the emptiness of campus summer shared by us
and the recruits who bark taunts at us
when someone swings and misses, drops a fly ball.
It is hard to miss a slo-pitch, yet it happens.
Many things happen and will continue to happen to us,
and to those in their spiffy academy t-shirts
who upon graduation will be given handcuffs and a gun.
This is why we, who also have dicks, say nothing.

Just Poets Member Statement:

This poem is told from the point of view of members of the less prestigious of two groups whose paths cross.  We get to hear from the little guy.
