Genesee Reading Series (5-10-11)


Getting dizzy from breathing all that Rochester spring air? Take a break and come out to Writers and Books for an evening of literary refreshment! The Genesee Reading Series, with impresario Wanda Schubmehl, continues to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Writers & Books with a program featuring Sonja Livingston and Sarah Freligh, authors who are sure to intrigue and delight you with poetry, fiction, memoir . . . and who knows what else?

Sonja LivingstonSonja Livingston’s writing has been honored with a NYFA Fellowship, an Iowa Review Award, Pushcart Prize nominations, and grants from Vermont Studio Center and The Deming Fund for Women. Her work has appeared in some of the country’s finest literary journals, including The Iowa Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Southeast Review, Fourth Genre, and Spoon River Poetry Review, and is anthologized in several textbooks on writing. Sonja holds an MFA from the University of New Orleans and an MSEd from SUNY Brockport. She is a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Memphis. Her first book, Ghostbread (University of Georgia Press, 2010), won the AWP Award for nonfiction and was recently adopted as a required textbook for all incoming freshmen at Nazareth College. She recently completed her first novel and is working on a new collection of lyric essays about daring and mysterious women.

Sarah FrelighSarah Freligh is the author of Sort of Gone (Turning Point Books, 2008), a book of poems that follows the rise and fall of a fictional pitcher named Al Stepansky. Her work has been featured on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac and appears in the upcoming anthology Good Poems: American Places. Among her awards are a 2009 poetry fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a poetry grant from the Constance Saltonstall Foundation in 2006, and a grant from the New York State Council for the Arts in 1997. Sarah, who was born and raised in Michigan, is currently working on her second book of poems and a novel, Half-past Crazy.

The Genesee Reading Series will be held at Writers & Books, located at 740 University Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607, on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at 7:30 pm. Admission is $3 for members and $6 for the general public.
