Upcoming Poetry Events – June 2011

Summer’s here, and things are slowing down, but there are still poetry events a-happening. In fact, on June 14th the editor and guest editor of Redactions: Poetry & Poetics will each be having a poetry reading but in different locations. Here’s you poetry challenge for June: Make both of those readings in the same night!

Don’t forget to read the May Poet Talk. It’s available as a PDF by clicking Poet Talk June 2011 or visiting the Poet Talk page above.

Thursday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. – A Conversation with John Ashbery. At this special event John Ashbery – winner of the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award – speaks on his life and work. Joining him on stage will be poet, critic and UR professor of English James Longenbach. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition John Ashbery and Friends: Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, the conversation is free to members of Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) and Writers & Books, and it is included in Gallery admission for all others. Followed by a reception. The MAG is located at 500 University Ave, Rochester, NY.

Saturday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m. – Just Poets Annual Picnic. Because this is a business meeting and a members meeting, we do ask that you not bring casual friends to the picnic. This event is for members and their significant others only. The meeting picnic will have a lot of socializing and eating time, but we will also have our annual salon so bring a poem to read (either by you or by someone else whose work you like.) Since we won’t be doing a workshop, you do not need to bring multiple copies. We will also be asking you to bring a dish to share. This event is hosted by Ed Scutt. The event will be held at 258 Macintosh Drive, Rochester 14626. To see a map, click here. For detailed directions, see page 4 of Poet Talk June 2011.

If anyone has a couple of extra folding chairs they could bring, that would be a big help! Also, if someone buys their paper goods at BJ’s or some other wholesale store and has extra paper napkins around the house, those would be helpful as well. Just toss them into your car along with the poem you’re bringing to share at our salon.

If any of you have not yet responded to the invitation but would like to come at the last minute, please don’t forget to contact Elaine Olsson at etolsson(at)frontiernet.net (replace “(at)” with “@”) to let her know you are coming and what dish you are bringing to pass.
