Journey to the Muse: A Writers Workshop: Muse, Symbol, and Language

A Writers Workshop: Muse, Symbol, and Language
Saturday September 24, 2011 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Nine Muses

The nine muses: Clio, Thalia, Erato, Euterpe, Polyhymnia, Calliope, Terpsichore, Urania, Melpomene

As writers we are continually challenged to tell the truth as we know it so far. But that last bit, as we know it so far, now there’s the rub. How do we as writers discover the truth that we personally are called to write? If we try to invent the truth, try to force it by our own cunning, cleverness, and ego, it either ceases to be the truth, or it becomes a stale dried up truth with no juice.

We must continually search for new, as well as ancient, truths that have yet to be told. But to search, and really see, we must leave our conscious world behind and explore the world deeply with new eyes using the language of myth, gesture, and symbol. This is the language known by our unconscious.

Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell

Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell

Psychologist Carl Jung and writer-mythologist Joseph Campbell pioneered the links between myth and the human mind. Jung developed a technique called active imagination which many have seen is highly related to shamanic journey work. Jung developed this mediation technique as a way to dialog with the unconscious and carry back images, symbols, and language into the conscious realm for integration and learning.

Indigenous peoples across the globe learned how to journey into non-ordinary reality, the world of spirit, the world of myth to explore and find their own visions, their own songs. Creativity either as paintings, weavings, songs, or poems came as gifts (sometimes hard won) from the spirit world. In this course we will journey to our Muse, one who will help us expand our creative path helping us discover symbols, stories, techniques to use on our creative journey in this world.

About The Instructor: Dave Tilley is a local poet, visual artist, and shamanic practitioner who has been published in various journals both in print and online. In 2010 Dave, along with his collaborator Donna Marbach, is the author of Twisted Pair (Foothills Publishing).
