Thursday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m. – September 11 Commemorative Concert. Perhaps you wrote a September 11  poem or read one that touched you. What has changed in the last 10 years because of it? What has changed in you? And what would you want to change? For inspiration come to the September 11 Commemorative Concert at the Memorial Art Gallery Fountain Court. It will be an evening of music and poetry commemorates the events of September 11, 2001. Hans Davidsson, professor of organ at the Eastman School of Music, performs on the Italian Baroque organ, William Heyen, poet and professor emeritus of English at SUNY Brockport, will read from the anthology he edited, September 11, 2001: American Writers Respond. Admission is free. The Memorial Art Gallery is located at 500 University Avenue.

Saturday, September 10, at 1:30 p.m. – Just Poets meeting at St. John Fisher College  in the  COP conference room on the second floor of the Campus Center. In the first part of the meeting, Kitty Jospe will be presenting a powerpoint, “What in the World is Poetry.” Based on the interpretations of Ezra Pound’s injunction, “Make it new”, she invites you to join her in examining the ways we pay attention to poems and possibilities for deepening our appreciation of them. What universals link great poems across cultural barriers and across time, and what windows in our own world vision do we learn from their translation? Whether language of nature, art, music, sign language, dance, or silent traces, no matter your background, the goal of the talk is to leave you with an urge to talk to your muse and tap into new ideas for your writing. If time permits, we will test contemporary poems against those revived from the classics in the 20th century.

Following the presentation, there will be the usual workshopping of poems. Colleen Powderly will be one of the facilitators, the other to be announced. Remember to bring 10 -12 typed copies for sharing.

This is an ideal time to consider inviting A NEW FRIEND! If you are a teacher, bring your students. If you have met someone who has never tried poetry and is curious why you are smitten with the poetry bug, bring them, too!
