Upcoming Poetry Events – October 2011

Oh man, October is gonna be whack busy on the Rochester poetry scene. Be sure to pick your events carefully because there are a few days with two or three events at the same time. Oh, and don’t forget the Ocotber 30th birthday of the man who saved poetry, Ezra Pound. It will be his 126th birtday.

Saturday, October 1 at 1:30 p.m. – The Just Poets monthly meeting at St. John Fisher College  in the  COP conference room on the second floor of the Campus Center.. This meeting will be led by M. J. Iuppa.

Saturday, October 1 at 4:00 p.m. – Staged reading of three short plays by Patricia Roth Scwartz. The reading features John Roche, Ed Scutt, and Pat and Judy McMillan. This event is free.

Tuesday, October 4 at 8:00 p.m. – Ron Bailey and Vincent F. A. Golphin read at the Little Theatre Cafe. This event is hosted by Steven Huff and is sponsored by Writers & Books. The event is free. For more information: Little Theatre Cafe Reading.

Ocotber 6, 7, 8, and 9 at 2:00 p.m. – Luigi Pirandello‘s Six Characters in Search of an Author directed by Ed Scutt will be performed at the Multi-use Community Cultural Center (MUCCC). MUCCC is located at 142 Atlantic Ave, Rochester, NY 14607. Ticket prices: $10 in advance, $20 at the door, $15 for seniors and students. For more information, call 585-234-1254.

Tuesday, October 11 at 4:00 p.m. – Lyn Lifshin reading in the Bamboo Room of the RIT Campus Center. (The Campus Center is adjacent to the Student Alumni Union and the Bamboo Room is on the second floor.) This event is free and open to the public and will have interpreters.

Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. – Billy Collins reading at Monroe Community College Brighton Campus, Theater, Buidling 4. Tickets are $10 for the general public. They are available at the Campus Center Service Desk in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center, Bldg. 3, at the Damon City Campus Bookstore, 228 East Main Street, and online at http://www.monroecctickets.com/. For further information, call 585-292-2534.

Thursday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. – David Michael Nixon will be the featured reader at the monthly the Just Poets Reading Series hosted by Ed Scutt. The reading will be held in the upstairs Community Room at the Pittsford Barnes & Noble. It will be followed by an open mic. Bring a poem or two to read and share with your fellow poets and other readers.

Thursday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. – Thom Ward book-release reading at Writers & Books. Ward’s newest collection is Etcetera’s Mistress.

Thursday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. – Michael Meyerhofer reads at St. John Fisher.

Friday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. – Michael Meyerhofer reads at Lift Bridge Book Shop, located at 45 Main Street in Brockport, NY.

Saturday, October 15 – The Just Poets’ Gel Center Retreat. This is a full-day poetry retreat sponsored by Just Poets, featuring workshops by Michael Meyerhofer, Kitty Jospe, Donna Marbach, Colleen Powderly, and John Roche. Tuesday, October 18 at 4:00 p.m. – Martha Deed and Stephen Baraban read at the Reading Room, located on the second floor of the RIT Campus Center. (The Campus Center is adjacent to the Student Alumni Union and the Bamboo Room is on the second floor.)

Wednesday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m. – A reading celebrating 40 years of Earth’s Daughters, a Buffalo-based feminist press and magazine. The reading will feature Kastle Brill, Ryki Zuckerman, Joyce Kessel, and Janna Willoughby, plus poems by Rochester contributors Leah Zazulyer, Anne Coon, Karla Linn Merrifield, and Gail Hosking.  Thanks to M.J. Iuppa for hosting this event co-sponsored by Just Poets. This event is at the Wilson Formal Lounge at St. John Fisher.

Wednesday, October 19 at 8:00 p.m. – The SUNY Brockport Writers Forum with Forrest Gander. This event is held in the New York Room in Cooper Hall at SUNY Brockport. Admission is free.

Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. – Susan Deer Cloud and Lance Henson at the Honors House at the Finger Lakes Community College.

Saturday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. – Tom Holmes book release reading and party. Holmes’ newest collection is Poems from an Empty Church from Palettes & Quills. Thursday, October 27 – John Retallack and Anne Coon launch their photography and poetry book. This event is at the Cary Collecton in the Wallace Library at RIT.
